同一 usually comes directly before a noun, often with a measure word, to say two or more things are literally the same one. It sounds a bit more formal than 一样. Example: 我们住在同一个城市。(Wǒmen zhù zài tóng yī gè chéngshì.) We live in the same city.
同 (tóng) means same or together, and 一 (yī) means one. When things share one and the same identity, they are 同一 (tóngyī).
Common mistake: Learners often use 同一 as a predicate, as in 这两本书同一, when they mean the books are alike. In that case use 一样 instead, as in 这两本书一样 (zhè liǎng běn shū yīyàng).
