How to use 增长
增长 is used for numbers, amounts and abstract things that rise over time, like population, income, the economy or knowledge. It often appears in news and reports, and can take a percentage after it. Example: 今年的收入增长了百分之十。(Jīnnián de shōurù zēngzhǎngle bǎi fēn zhī shí.) This year's income grew by ten percent.
增 (zēng) has the earth radical 土 plus 曾, so picture piling more earth on a mound to make it bigger. 长 (zhǎng) means to grow, so together 增长 is adding more and growing larger.
