Meaning of 长期
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- long-term; for a protracted period
How to use 长期
长期 is often used before a noun or verb to describe something that lasts a long time, like 长期计划 (chángqī jìhuà) long-term plan. It can also stand alone after 是 or work like an adverb. Example: 他长期住在北京。(Tā chángqī zhù zài Běijīng.) He has lived in Beijing for a long time.
长 (cháng) means long and 期 (qī) means a period of time, as in 星期 (xīngqī) week and 日期 (rìqī) date. Put them together and you get a long period, so long-term.
Common mistake: 长 has two readings. In 长期 it is cháng (long), not zhǎng as in 长大 (zhǎngdà) to grow up or 队长 (duìzhǎng) captain, so do not say zhǎngqī.
