Meaning of 更加
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- more (than sth else)
- even more
How to use 更加
更加 is an adverb placed before adjectives or verbs to show a further increase compared with before or with something else. It sounds a bit more formal and emphatic than 更 alone, and is common in writing and speeches. Example: 学了中文以后,他更加喜欢中国了。(Xué le Zhōngwén yǐhòu, tā gèngjiā xǐhuan Zhōngguó le.) After learning Chinese, he likes China even more.
Think of 更 (gèng) as "even more" and 加 (jiā) as "add," the same 加 you see in 增加 (zēngjiā, to increase). Put them together and you add even more of a quality.
Common mistake: Learners often read 更 in the first tone as gēng, which belongs to words like 更新 (gēngxīn, to update). In 更加 it is always fourth tone, gèng. Also, do not combine 更加 with 很 or 非常, as in 更加很好. Say 更加好 instead.
