How to use 样
样 is most often used inside common words like 一样 (yīyàng), 这样 (zhèyàng) and 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng), and on its own as a classifier meaning kind or type. Example: 我买了三样菜。(Wǒ mǎi le sān yàng cài.) I bought three kinds of dishes.
样 is made of 木 (mù, wood) on the left and 羊 (yáng, sheep) on the right, and 羊 also gives the sound. Picture carving a wooden sheep to use as a pattern, so every copy has the same shape and appearance.
Common mistake: Learners often write the right side as 半 or forget the extra vertical stroke of 羊 running down through the bottom. Also note the tone: 样 is fourth tone yàng, not second tone like 羊 (yáng).
