Meaning of 那样
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- that kind
- that sort
How to use 那样
那样 describes a manner, degree, or kind that is farther away or already mentioned. It can come before a verb, before a noun (often with 的), or stand alone. Example: 别那样说话。(Bié nàyàng shuōhuà.) Don't talk like that.
那 (nà) means "that" and 样 (yàng) means "kind" or "appearance", so 那样 is literally "that appearance": the way that thing over there looks or is done. Pair it in your mind with 这样 (zhèyàng), "this way", for things close to you.
Common mistake: Learners often write 那 (nà) with the wrong tone, or mix it up with 哪 (nǎ, which). 哪样 (nǎyàng) means "which kind", so the tone changes a statement into a question. Also, 样 is fourth tone (yàng), not second.
