How to use 根据
根据 is most often used as a preposition at the start of a sentence to name a source or basis, common in news, reports and formal speech. It can also be a noun meaning basis or grounds, as in 没有根据 (méiyǒu gēnjù), groundless. Example: 根据天气预报,明天会下雨。(Gēnjù tiānqì yùbào, míngtiān huì xià yǔ.) According to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.
根 (gēn) means root, and 据 (jù) means to rely on or base on. Something 根据 is what you rely on at the root, so it means the basis, or according to.
Common mistake: Learners often use 根据 for people's opinions, as in 根据我 for according to me, but Chinese uses 我认为 (wǒ rènwéi) or 在我看来 (zài wǒ kàn lái) instead. Also do not confuse 据 (jù) with 剧 (jù, drama), which sounds the same but has the knife radical.
