How to use 进
进 means to enter or to move forward, and it often pairs with 来 (lái) or 去 (qù) to show direction toward or away from the speaker. You will hear 请进 (qǐng jìn) whenever someone knocks on a door. Example: 他走进教室。(Tā zǒujìn jiàoshì.) He walked into the classroom.
进 (jìn) has the walking radical 辶 at the bottom left, so think of feet moving forward. Picture someone walking past a well 井 shape and stepping through a door to go in.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 进 (jìn) with 近 (jìn, near), which sounds the same and also uses 辶 but has 斤 inside instead of 井. Another trap is saying 我进 alone for 'I come in'; Chinese usually adds a direction, as in 我进来了 (wǒ jìnlái le).
