How to use 面试
面试 is used for job interviews, school admission interviews, and similar in-person evaluations. It works as a verb or a noun, and you often hear 参加面试 (cānjiā miànshì, to attend an interview). Example: 我明天有一个面试。(Wǒ míngtiān yǒu yí gè miànshì.) I have an interview tomorrow.
面 (miàn) means face, and 试 (shì) means to test, as in 考试 (kǎoshì). A 面试 is a test you take face to face.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes use 面试 for a journalist interviewing someone, but that is 采访 (cǎifǎng). 面试 is only for evaluating a candidate.
