How to use 记
On its own, 记 often means to write something down or to keep something in mind, and it appears in many common words like 记得 (jìde) and 笔记 (bǐjì). It can also count blows or shots, as in 一记耳光 (yí jì ěrguāng, a slap). Example: 我记不住他的名字。(Wǒ jì bú zhù tā de míngzi.) I can't remember his name.
记 is made of 讠 (speech, words) on the left and 己 (jǐ, self) on the right. Picture yourself putting words down for your own later use, which is what recording and remembering are.
Common mistake: Learners often mix up the right side 己 (jǐ) with 已 (yǐ) or 巳 (sì). In 记 the last stroke of 己 does not close at the top left, so leave that gap open. Learners also sometimes say 我记 when they mean I remember. Use 我记得 for that, and save 记住 for making a point to commit something to memory.
