How to use 入
入 is mostly used in compound words like 进入 (jìnrù) to enter, 入口 (rùkǒu) entrance, and 加入 (jiārù) to join, and on its own it sounds formal or written. Example: 他去年加入了这个俱乐部。(Tā qùnián jiārù le zhège jùlèbù.) He joined this club last year.
入 (rù) looks like a person stepping forward with the long stroke leaning in, like someone walking through a doorway. Picture a pointed wedge pushing its way inside.
Common mistake: Learners often confuse 入 (rù) with 人 (rén, person) and 八 (bā, eight). In 入 the left stroke is short and leans into the longer right stroke, while in 人 the left stroke is the longer one.
