Meaning of 发怒
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- to get angry
How to use 发怒
发怒 is a fairly formal or written way to say someone gets angry, often describing a reaction to something. In everyday speech people more often say 生气 (shēngqì). Example: 他听了这句话就发怒了。(Tā tīng le zhè jù huà jiù fānù le.) He got angry when he heard that.
发 (fā) means to send out or emit, and 怒 (nù) means anger. To 发怒 is to let your anger come out, like 发出 (fāchū) sends out a sound.
Common mistake: Learners sometimes write 怒 as 努 (nǔ, effort), which has 力 at the bottom instead of 心. Anger is a feeling, so 怒 takes the heart 心. Also keep the fourth tone on nù, not the third tone of 努.
