Meaning of 更是
Definitions from CC-CEDICT.
- even more (so)
How to use 更是
更是 is used in writing and formal speech to say that something applies even more strongly to a second case. It often follows a first clause that sets up a comparison. Example: 这里夏天很热,八月更是热得受不了。(Zhèlǐ xiàtiān hěn rè, bāyuè gèngshì rè de shòu bù liǎo.) Summers here are hot, and August is even more unbearably hot.
更 (gèng) means "even more" and 是 (shì) means "is." Put them together and you get "is even more so," a way to push a statement one step further.
Common mistake: Learners often read 更 with the first tone, gēng, as in 更改 (gēnggǎi, to change). In 更是 it is always the fourth tone, gèng.
